What we do

Our Activities in Abuja Central Council

“No work of Charity is foreign to the society”. Whatever the problems that are encountered, sickness or disability, mental or physical, family problems, social or economic, the loneliness of old age, the alcoholic, the drug addict, the social misfit, the homeless, etc the Society of St Vincent de Paul is there to help.
We provide material and spiritual aid to the poor

The greatest gift we give to the poor is our time, our presence, our concern, our listening whenever, possible. We endeavor to build up friendship with the people we assist, as it is on the basis of friendship and trust that our activities and services are based.

Meetings/Attending to our Masters

Conferences meet at least once in a week to report, deliberate and attend to our masters and friend’s-in-need in their various areas of need,  which is not limited to the following, medical aid, provisions, feeding and foodstuff, transport for the stranded, clothing, counseling, accommodation etc. We distribute foodstuff, provision, clothing, cash etc during Christmas, Easter and our feast day celebration.

Visitations

Visitations are carried out by conferences to hospitals (mainly general hospitals) in the vicinity where they pay medical bills, feed, get provisions etc for indigent patients and also pray for them. The society also carries out periodic visitation to hospitals where every patient is visited with items and prayed for. There is also periodic visitation to remote communities, prison, orphanages, IDPs with cash, clothing, foodstuff, provisions, sacramental etc. The Central Council visits in emergency situations e.g IDP camps, Suleja bomb victims and distribute relief items.

Investigation

We investigate cases to get facts, circumstances, problems and to ascertain the genuineness or authenticity of the cases and also to find out the best way to be of assistance.

Empowerment

We empower our masters in education, skill acquisition, and small-scale business.
Counseling and Reconciliation: Counseling of our masters and reconciliation of marriages, families, friends, partners etc is key in the course of our work.

Training/Workshop

The Abuja Central Council conducts biannual training/workshop for its members to better equip them for competent services.

Fund Solicitation

We also solicit funds to carry out our numerous works.

We also solicit for funds to carry out our numerous works.

The funds come mainly from our numerous benefactors, church collections, individual donations from good spirited people, the SSVP poor boxes stationed at various corners of the church building and Secret Bag Collections (SBC) by members at every meeting.

Funds also comes from organisations, private/public companies and Non-Governmental Organisations etc.

Internal Twinning

INSTITUTION and AGGREGATION

Abuja Central Council was instituted on 3rd July, 2001. In the pursuit of meeting with the stipulated criteria and operating strictly in consonance with the set objectives of the Society, the Council ensured that most of the Inaugurated Conferences that have met the set criteria for aggregation apply for it.

Presently, over Fifty (50) conferences within the Council have been aggregated and have also been issued with their aggregation certificates.

TWINNING

Conferences and Councils help others in needs, both at the national and international level. This is one of the activities most cherished by the Society. The awareness of acute poverty in a great number of countries and the Vincentian preferential option for the poor spurs Conferences and Councils to assist others with less resources or in particular situations. This direct link between two Conferences or Councils, consisting of sharing prayer, a profound friendship and material resources, is called twinning. This activity contributes to world peace and to understanding cultural exchange among peoples. Twinning is done through the national twinning officer:-

(a)        To a Conference outside Nigeria;

(b)       To another Conference within Nigeria.

The Abuja Central Council has been making serious efforts in training conferences to understand the meaning, modalities and benefits of twinning. The Council is still operating her Internal Twinning arrangement which was introduced as part of the efforts to make conferences understand the twinning practice and procedures that enables conferences twinned together to interact for cross fertilization of ideas, financial assistance and mutual collaboration in resource sharing. It is hoped that very soon, Conferences will fully understand the modalities and benefits and take advantage of it. The Internal Twinning Chart of the Council is as shown below:

2.Visit conferences, guide and proffer solutions to their challenges.

  1. Liaise with mother conferences of uninaugurated conferences.
  2. Visit conferences in their jurisdiction.
  3. Try to establish the society in parishes where they are not existing in their jurisdiction.
  4. Encourage conference interaction within their jurisdiction.
  5. Encourage conference to utilize the internal twinning process.
